Brockhill A Level Biology Trip
“The annual A Level Biology field trip to Brockhill Country Park took place this year on 6 and 7 July. As most readers well know, there was destined to be hot weather on the Friday for two of the groups of 20 students, but thankfully they adhered to the long trousers and wellies recommendation and we were just mindful of hydration and taking breaks in the afternoon. As part of the practical element of the course students needed to plan and carry out fieldwork techniques, this year it included a belt transect, which most students have carried out before as part of their time at Highworth, and kick sampling in the stream, which is unique to A Level. Students were asked to investigate the correlation between depth of stream and frequency of fresh water shrimp. Students enjoyed identifying other organisms as mayfly nymph, larvae and damselfly. One group was very excited to spot and follow a frog too. We have to return to the education room to ensure hands are washed before lunch so it is always an opportunity for students to use the café but especially for staff to get cheesy chips! A successful day out had by all and now students are using statistical tests to see if the correlation is significant or not.”
